Using highly focused, MRI strength magnetic pulses, TMS activates a specific region of the brain which regulates mood. This is the only treatment for depression which has virtually no side effects. The only contraindication is having metal implants in the upper body or head. It is covered by most insurances. Patients arrive, sit in a chair for 20-40 minutes while an 8-shaped coil is placed over their left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (front right of brain) and delivers pulses. Sessions are five days a week for six weeks. Patients can drive themselves to and from the session. Treatments are 75% effective, which is twice as effective as oral medications alone.
